The Huntingdon County Commissioners are accepting application for the position of VETERANS SERVICE OFFICER (VSO) Department - Veteran's Affairs Supervisor - County Commissioners Date Revised – January 2023 Job Statement VSOs play a vital role in ensuring that veterans and their dependents receive all VA benefits for which they are eligible. They serve as the VA subject-matter expert, VA liaison, comrade who listens with empathy and confidentiality, and counselor to any veteran in need. Job Duties/Responsibilities Serve as first point of contact for Veterans seeking assistance and provide direction, support, and advice to Veterans and their dependents Prepare claim forms and briefs, request hearings, and review state board decisions Advise Veterans of possible benefits, including but not limited to service-connected disability benefits, VA healthcare System enrollment, Temporary Monetary Assistance, Home Loan Benefits, Vocational Benefits, Pension Benefits and Burial Benefits Assist veterans with filling out forms and applications Assist with office administrative tasks including processing forms, filing reports, recording discharges and providing reference material and processing VA ID Cards Purchase necessary supplies, including flags and markers. Able to react productively to change and handle other duties as assigned. Job Specifications Education - High School diploma or equivalent Valid Driver’s License and Current Auto Insurance General Requirements Good working knowledge of office terminology, procedures and equipment, including a computer, fax, printer, camera. Working knowledge of Microsoft Office to include Word, Excel and Outlook. Ability to communicate effectively in presentation and written materials. Ability to communicate in an appropriate manner and get along well with others. Ability to understand and follow complex oral and/or written instructions. Ability to make major decisions using good judgment and acting in accordance with established policies and procedures. Specific Requirements Ability to listen and counsel clients and be understanding to their problems and needs. Must be able to obtain Certification through Service Organizations. Ability to work effectively with the general public and local benefit organizations.
