In 2009, the seven Huntingdon County Drop-off locations recycled 381 tons of materials.  

Curbside facts

  • In 2009, one mandated curbside program within Huntingdon County recycled 95 tons of materials and 613 tons of yard waste.

  • 35% of our waste stream was recycled.

Total tons of garbage in Huntingdon County

  • 23,601tons of garbage was disposed of in Huntingdon County in 2009.

  • 12,868 tons including yard and leaf waste were recycled in 2009.

Pennsylvania and the United States  

  1. Aluminum recycling uses 95% less energy than manufacturing aluminum from natural resources.  

  2. Recycling a 12 ounce aluminum beverage can saves enough energy to light a 100 watt bulb for three and one half hours or operate a television set for three hours.

  3. Every ton of glass recycled saves about nine gallons of fuel oil.  

  4. Recycling one glass bottle saves enough energy to operate a TV for about 3 hours or light a 100 watt bulb for about 4 hours.  

  5. Every ton of paper that is not land filled saves 3 cubic yards of landfill space.

  6. The average American throws out his own weight in packaging every month.

  7. There are more than 46 different types of plastic in common use.  

  8. Plastic soda bottles are made of PET (Polyethyleneterapthlate).  

  9. Recycled PET can be made into bathtubs, shower stalls, sinks, carpeting, fiberfill, landfill liners, geotextiles and apparel.  

  10. Mixed plastic can be made into plastic wood for car stops, picnic benches, boat docks, fence posts and other uses where wood is used.  

  11. It takes 20 trees to keep one baby in disposable diapers for two years.  

  12. Reduce waste by purchasing products that are durable, repairable, recyclable and have minimal packaging.

  13. Pennsylvania has over 850 curbside programs serving 8.5 million people.  This is 75% of the population.

  14. Pennsylvania is recycling over 35% of its waste.
