The office of Public Defender is mandated by the constitution. The Public Defender, who is appointed by the Board of County Commissioners, provides legal service to any person, who for lack of sufficient funds, is unable to obtain legal counsel in Criminal Court proceedings. Approximately 400 cases are handled each year.
